Public health insurance system is based on the principle of solidarity. Generally, all family members of a common household are covered free of charge by the main member's contribution. Medical care can be availed in Germany and partly in Europe. Premiums and benefits which must only be adequate and sufficient are subject to German legislation. By 2024 the standard contribution rate for all 95 public health insurance plans is set at 14.60% of gross monthly income. Each provider may add an additional fee between 0,9 and 2,7%. The statutory standard fee is at 1.70% which results in a total contribution rate of 16.3%. However, this is limited to a legally determined threshold of gross income. The additional standard contribution for long-term care is between 2.40 and 3.40%, depending on the number of children (4.00 % for childless members). Thus, the overall maximum public health insurance contribution rate is 20.30% of gross monthly income. That is a maximum monthly contribution of EUR 1,050.53.Age, gender, health status or number of insured persons do not affect the premium. Singles pay as much as families. The employer participates with 50% of the monthly contribution (up to EUR 509.74 at most) Private health insurance covers all members individually. The individual range of benefits can be selected from a variety of tariffs. Once the insurance cover has been agreed, the insurer cannot reduce benefits. The coverage is granted worldwide and includes the free choice of doctors, hospitals and dentists. Compared to public health insurance, the contributions for an individual are usually lower with better coverage at the same time. Contributions of private health insurance depend on age, health condition and chosen tariff. They are calculated separately for each insured person. The state of health can have an effect on the contribution or even lead to a rejection of the application for private health insurance.
Yes, your pension number will be applied by the insurance company and automatically communicated to your employer and you. This usually takes about three weeks.
Yes. A few weeks after the insurance company confirmed your membership, you will receive post with more information about how to acquire your health card.
As soon as your membership is confirmed, you're immediately eligible to see a physician without any delay. Just find a local doctor who communicates in the language you're most comfortable with and schedule your visit either by phone online. Always bring your health card to the doctor as you will be asked for it. This is the only item you'll need to provide. Typically, there's no need for any form of payment at the time of the visit.
Yes, your wife and children can be co-insured free of charge up to the age of 18 if they do not have an income of more than €535 per month.
If you are employed, your insurance premiums will be automatically deducted from your salary. By law, your employer is obligated to cover half of your insurance premium, with the remaining half being taken out of your monthly earnings. If you're self-employed, a student, or unemployed, you'll need to provide an IBAN for the purpose of setting up automatic monthly deductions for your insurance payments.
Public health insurance covers you for outpatient, inpatient and dental treatments. Nevertheless, some of the benefits are not sufficient and it is strongly recommended that you take out additional private insurance, for example in the dental sector.
Yes. Premiums may increase as they are proportionally linked to the insured individual's income growth. Moreover, the income ceiling that determines the highest contribution bracket is typically adjusted upwards annually.
